Harvest Recordings teams with Jim James to release Floating Action LP

Black Mountain’s Seth Kauffman has never had a lot of luck with record labels.

As Floating Action, his current pairing of super-slick live band and detail-oriented solo recording project, he makes the kind of well-worn, funky soul that could easily charm a larger audience. But his previous imprint, Park The Van, stalled on releasing Floating Action’s sophomore effort, Desert Etiquette (ranked No. 2 in Shuffle’s Top 25 Albums of 2011)forcing Kauffman to press tapes of the album to give it a physical release. In interviews, Kauffman left little doubt that he wasn’t satisfied with the situation.

At long last, it seems that Floating Action may get the attention it deserves. Removador Recordings and Solutions, the imprint of My Morning Jacket crooner Jim James, has partnered with Harvest Recordings, the label end of Asheville music shop Harvest Records, to release the outfit’s new album, Fake Blood, later this summer. The album will come out in a limited-to-500 vinyl pressing, though no release date has been set. The partnership was announced in the current edition of Harvest Records’ newsletter, which also hints that a Jim James/Floating Action remix project may soon be on the way.

It’s exciting stuff, and Shuffle will be sure to keep you up to date with any developments. For now, get ready for Fake Blood by listening to a couple tracks from Desert Etiquette, streaming below. —Jordan Lawrence
