New Charleston label Hearts and Plugs offers free sampler
The new Charleston label Hearts and Plugs kicked off in January with the official release of Run Dan Run’s lush and charming sophomore LP, Normal. And, though the label is helmed by RDR’s titular Dan (McCurry), it’s no mere front for self-released fluff. On April 10, the label will release The Lovely Few’s The Perseids.
In the meantime, though, Hearts and Plugs offers an introduction to its full roster — which, in addition to Run Dan Run and The Lovely Few, includes Mr. Jenkins and Ashley Hopkins — via a free digital sampler.
Each band contributes three songs, and the compilation manages to find a common thread of casual and quiet melody coursing through all four acts. And because none stray too far from the structures and melodies of reserved indie pop, the differences become more pronouced. The Lovely Few’s sampled and scratched woodwinds on “This One” serve an able complement to the muted brass on Run Dan Run’s “Lovesick Animal.” And Mr. Jenkins rhythmically-centered and lo-fi “Where Do We Go Now?” shares a vocal restraint with Hopkins’ jazzy dirge “Glass & Chalk.”
