Rhys Chatham’s Guitar Trio ensemble assembled for Hopscotch
It’s notable enough that Rhys Chatham, the influential composer and experimentalist, had been booked to perform his groundbreaking 1978 composition Guitar Trio at this year’s Hopscotch Music Festival, but seeing the stacked deck of players who’ll bring the monolithic masterpiece to life only has us more excited.
Hopscotch announced today that the ensemble performing Guitar Trio on Thursday, Sept. 8, would be an all-star team of local musicians, plus Chatham, Nashville whiz-kid William Tyler and Chicago’s David Daniell. The nine local players include Polvo’s Ash Bowie, Jenks Miller of Horseback and Mount Moriah, Whatever Brains’ Rich Ivey, Birds of Avalon’s Paul Siler and Cheetie Kumar, Work Clothes’ Jenny Waters, Raleigh composer Craig Hilton, Annuals bassist Mike Robinson, and drummer Lee Waters of Mount Moriah (among others).
The Hopscotch website offers plenty more information on each of the players, and it’s worth reading for Ivey’s quote alone. Check it here.
