Shakori Hills announces third annual NC Stars in the Round fundraiser

NC Stars in the Round

Since 2003, the Shakori Hills Community Arts Center has labored to establish the Shakori farmstead in Silk Hope, N.C. into a center for arts, education and community. But since fulfilling that mission involves buying the actual land, the Arts Center has been in full-on fundraiser mode. So far SHCAC’s made massive progress, having accrued $75,000 — enough for a down payment. Most of this earned through a tried and true fundraising technique: music festivals. The organization currently holds three a year; This month marks the third anniversary of the NC Stars in the Round fundraiser.

Andrew Marlin (Mandolin Orange), Greg Humphreys (Hobex), Christy Smith (The Tender Fruit), Lynn Blakey (Tres Chicas), Lizzy Ross, Randy Dean Whitt, Crys Matthews, and Alex Hall comprise this year’s gathered stars. The musicians will perform in a rotating songwriting circle, sharing their talents “one song at a time.” Festival veterans The Ary Mountaineers will follow with a closing set of “sweet, summery Americana.”

The Aug. 18 event asks $10 in advance, or $15 the day of show (unless you’re under 12, in which case you’ll get in free). There’ll be food/refreshments from Shakori Hills Pizza Shop, The Carolina Brewery, Lil Coffee Barn, and everyone’s encouraged to camp overnight. —Sam Baltes
