SULTAN BATHERY @ NIGHTLIGHT, CHAPEL HILL & THE MILL, CHARLESTON

Nearing the end of a fairly extensive U.S. tour, Italian garage-fiends Sultan Bathery crash into the Carolinas with a lively resurrection of ’60s garage, unencumbered by punk-scuffed revisions. Sure, the vocals are fuzz-fringed, but the guitars are crisp and trebly, the bass a punchy burble below and the drums stab cleanly, cutting a well-defined rhythm for songs that flirt with surf and rockabilly. May’s Fireworx EP is a concise sampler of the band’s welcome weirdness and barely-polished swagger. In Chapel Hill, Sultan Bathery is joined by the supercharged garage-ragers Flesh Wounds, while the Charleston gig also boasts The Lean Few‘s loose and streamlined take on the genre.—Bryan C. Reed
