BRICKSIDE FESTIVAL @ DUKE UNIVERSITY, DURHAM

Strangely, this isn’t even the Triangle’s marquee festival this weekend. That honor belongs to Racing the Cure, a benefit for two-year-old cancer patient Oliver Gant, that, among other things, will cram the now world-famous Avett Brothers into a 250-capcity room. But for my money, Duke’s Brickside is the more exciting fest. The line-up is packed with left-of-field gems, most of whom barely come around these parts. Indie rock devotees are likely already slobbering over fuzz-rocker Kurt Vile and polite poppers Hospitality. The nerdy crowd, on the other hand, will go gaga over the spaced-out blues of The Gunn-Truscinski Duo and a solo performance by Sun Kil Moon frontman Mark Kozelek. A reunion performance by the noisy avant-gardeists Supreme Dicks and sets by Whatever Brains, Oneohtrix Point Never and Royal Baths add further intrigue to the fascinating line-up. The festival goes from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. and takes place at the Jameson Gallery and Duke Coffeehouse, both on the university’s campus.
