  • 5/08 — ELECTION DAY: VOTE AGAINST AMENDMENT ONE

As Election Day draws near, and with it the decision of North Carolina’s citizens whether to permanently, doubly deny legal recognition to all civil or domestic partnerships other than heterosexual marriage, the music scene — particularly near the state’s capital — is throwing one last Hail-Mary burst of energy to drive awareness and down-to-the-wire fundraising for the anti-Amendment cause. Consider it the Marriage Equality Music Festival. Friday offers a pop heavy bill at Raleigh’s Kings, featuring the effervescent Cassis Orange and the fuzz-kissed psych-pop of Lilac Shadows. Saturday moves to the Nightlight in Chapel Hill, where popsmith Gordon Zacharias helms his Fan Modine ensemble at the top of a bill that also features the percussive art-pop of Organos, the garage-rock riot-act of Flesh Wounds and Schooner frontman Reid Johnson in his solo guise, Clinton Johnson. Sunday brings the right to choose — between the free outdoor rally and concert at Durham’s Pinhook and the star-studded Concert To Defeat Amendment One at Saxapahaw’s Haw River Ballroom. The former is free, and boasts Mount Moriah, Kooley High and Indigo Girl Amy Ray; the latter’s $80 ticket is a donation to The Coalition to Protect ALL North Carolina Families, and treats you to entertainment from Bob Mould, Love Language frontman Stu McLamb, comedians David Cross and Tig Notaro, actress Amber Tamblyn, and an acoustic Superchunk set. Then, of course, on Tuesday May 8 you’ll join the throngs of voters at the polls voting against the harmful amendment. —Bryan C. Reed
