To Do List (Nov. 1-7)
GIG OF THE WEEK
Nov. 2-3

FREE TIMES MUSIC CRAWL @ VARIOUS VENUES, COLUMBIA
The Music Crawl, hosted by the Columbia alt-weekly Free Times (which, full disclosure, is a publication to which I contribute), usually functions as a sort of State of the Scene report for the Palmetto State capital. This year, it seems, the scene is particularly strong. Even without the boost of two regional headliners —Floating Action and Bombadil — the two-day festival’s remaining 34 offer an impressive showing. The bills range from the spazzy post-hardcore of Burnt Books to the scrappy Southern rock of Say Brother; from the sharp, thoughtful hip-hop of Analog or Fat Rat da Czar to the scuzzy post-punk of Chemical Peel or Modern Man; and from the elegant folk of Sunshone Still to the driving dance-rock of Parlour Tricks. The schedule brims with local talent soon to make waves beyond the city limits, like Can’t Kids or Those Lavender Whales, kemp ridley or Pan. Yeah, Floating Action’s polyglot rock and Bombadil’s thematically nuanced folk-pop are good gets, but the locals make the Music Crawl what it is. More info, including a complete schedule of performances, is available here. —Bryan C. Reed
