GIG OF THE WEEK

GREENSBOROFEST @ VARIOUS VENUES, GREENSBORO

For a while now, Shuffle has trumpeted the rise of the Triad music scene, heralded by a battalion of intriguing new bands and events such as Winston-Salen’s annual Phuzz Phest. This weekend the area will once again trumpet its relevance  this time in the form of the annual Greensborofest. This year’s festival gathers a solid slate of local and regional talent for five nights of concerts. Thursday offers the biggest show of the bunch, an outdoor affair that boasts exciting Triad outfits — the fuzzy, retro-popping Estrangers and the energetic MC Miss Eaves — and a trio of N.C. hip-hop greats, including Raleigh rappers King Mez and Rapsody and 9th Wonder, the producer that all but coined the state’s signature sound with his laid-back, sample-heavy beats.  The rest of the shows mostly serve to highlight the area’s growing array of talent, from compelling jazz fusions (Brand New Life and Casual Curious) to catchy pop-rock revivalists (Jenny Besetzt) from quirky folk orchestras (Matty Sheets & The Blockheads) to energetic indie rockers (Mutant League and Raving Knaves). If you’re in the Triad this weekend, come out for all or part of this festival, and you’re sure to be smitten with the Triad’s growing scene.
