Toro Y Moi reveals single, announces Record Store Day 7-inch for Black Friday

Less than a week after announcing the Jan. 22 release of his new LP, Chaz “Toro Y Moi” Bundick has unveiled that album’s first single. “So Many Details” (streaming below) is the third song on Anything In Return, and it’s darker and more intensely rhythmic than anything in Toro’s extensive catalog. A head-knocking hip-hop beat underpins booming synthesizers and delicate effects, the contrast of which points toward dub and house. Bundick’s vocals occupy his typical falsetto crooning, but he adds frequent effects, contorting his voice as the song becomes more druggy and violent. Bundick’s been pigeonholed as a chillwave auteur and a soul revivalist, but moments like this reveal him to be an adventurous producer and singer who has no interest in sticking to any one style.
That point will be driven home even further with “So Many Details”‘ physical release, a 7-inch slated for Record Store Day’s Black Friday promotion. On the B-side Bundick will offer his own remix of the song, one that features Odd Future’s Hodgy Beats. As restless as he is talented, it seams that Bundick just couldn’t keep from tweaking his own song. As fascinating as the album version is, it’s hard to blame him for revisiting it.—Jordan Lawrence
