Video: Gauchiste’s “Viols”
On the band’s self-titled full-length debut, experimental supergroup Gauchiste invert black metal into a horrifying and insular soundscape, droning textures fitted to far-off bursts of concussive drumming and abrasive guitars. The recently released video for “Viols,” one of the album’s best offerings, mimics the approach visually. It’s a wholly unorthodox clip, adopting the gaudy mirror from the album’s cover as a frame and offering a series of haunting images. There’s a white monolith, a rope tightening into a noose and a shaky shot of loose twigs catching on fire. Nothing here constitutes a concrete threat, but taken as a whole it’s an interesting and unsettling display, wholly appropriate for the band’s captivating composition. –Jordan Lawrence
