Xiu Xiu announce new LP, debut single
Durham (via seemingly everywhere) electronic outfit Xiu Xiu announced its next record today, and debuted its first single, “Hi.”
The album, titled Always, will hit stores on March 6 via Polyvinyl.
Produced by Deerhoof‘s Greg Saunier (who also contributes drums and vocals to the album) and mixed by John Congleton (Antony and the Johnsons, Marilyn Manson, The Roots), the album promises to plenty of infectious beats. With titles such as “I Luv Abortion” and “Born to Suffer,” it seems it will also add to Jamie Stewart’s pedigree for shocking and evocative lyrics.
“Hi” provides heaping helpings of both. The kinetic dance rock evolves in tumbles, drum rolls begetting synth riffs, synth riffs begetting distorted guitars. In his words, Jamie Steward provides a rally cry for those who feel different and depressed. “If your body is wrong, wrong, wrong,” he intones, “and you regret residing in it/ Check razor blade in your throat/ Broken hearts will shine.” —Jordan Lawrence
